Did you know that your body is as vital as your spirit and soul?
Many people are failing to take good care of their bodies simply because they do not understand the value that God places on the body. Here is a biblical perspective, so you can be inspired to take better care of your body with healthy habits.
- Your body is the tool that allows you to fulfill your purpose on earth, and to advance the kingdom of God.
” For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV)
As you know, when you have a task to do, the result highly depends on the quality of the tool that you use. So, you must take good care of your “Tool,” which is your body.
Have you ever seen a spirit walking around? I guess no! Your spirit alone can’t help the poor, feed the hungry, or preach the gospel. You need a body to be able to do that. Even Jesus Himself needed a body to fulfill His purpose on this earth (Hebrews 10:5-6). So, your body matters! Therefore, you have the same responsibility to take good care of it as for the spirit and soul.
- Your complete holiness also includes the good care of the body.
“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:23 NKJV).
“Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.” (NLT)
The “whole” includes your body, spirit, and soul, and each part of your being is essential. The body is what allows you to interact with this physical world. Some people think that because we will not take this actual body with us in heaven, it is therefore not significant, which is not true.
Based on the scriptures above, your complete holiness also includes taking good care of your body. Things that defile the body go beyond blatant sin and include any unhealthy habit that destroys your body, such as cigarette smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and overeating, etc. Your body, spirit, and soul all belong to God and must be kept blameless.
- The gift of salvation is a comprehensive package that also includes the wellbeing of the body.
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV)
The penalties of sin are not just limited to the spirit and soul, but they also affected the body. Your spirit is affected by the broken relationship with God. Your soul is affected by that feeling of emptiness and all sorts of emotional pain. Your body is affected by the diseases and infirmities we struggle with today. Therefore, the redemptive work of Jesus on the cross also covers the body, and not just the spirit and soul. Your salvation implies restoration to wholeness, which is the abundant life that Jesus talks about in John 10:10. In Isaiah 61:1 and Luke 4:18, we see that Jesus addresses the whole person (Body, spirit, and soul), which clearly shows that your salvation is not limited to the spirit alone.
However, to actually experience the full benefit of your salvation, you must put in some work (Philippians 2:12). As Christians, we understand how to take care of our spirit and soul through prayer, Bible studies, self-discipline, and other uplifting activities. Sadly, when it comes to the body, we fail to implement the same discipline. In our churches, all the emphasis is placed on the spirit and soul; and not that much is done for the body. No wonder why we are struggling so much with poor health, just like unbelievers. Neglecting to take good care of your body is missing out on the opportunity to experience the abundant life that you have received through Jesus Christ.
The Bottom Line
Your body is as vital as your spirit and soul, for they all belong to God and must be kept blameless. Your body is the tool that allows you to fulfill your purpose here on earth and to advance the kingdom of God. Your salvation package is a comprehensive package that also includes the well-being of your body. Therefore, you must put in some works by taking good care of your body so you can experience the benefit of good health.
